Abstract: Some preliminary reports have described secondary effects of sex practice at high altitude: gastric pregnancy, diarrhoea, anorexia and increased susceptibility to AMS. Instead of ectopic pregnancy seems to have low incidence among mountaineers, at the present, reliable data are not available. Our goal was to deep in this topic, in order to fill this remarkable knowledge gap.

Twenty experimented and healthy expeditionary people (10 male and 10 female) participated in the study. All procedures were according to Helsinki Declaration. Base camp was established at 4,900m and the stage belonged for six weeks. In the five couples designated to integrate the control group, sexual activity was avoided by mechanical restraint (VulvFix-onÓ and Castit-LockÓ, ACME, USA) and exhaustive surveillance. Experimental group (five voluntary couples) was strongly encouraged to sexual desinhibition. Clinical evaluation and Lake Louise AMS score were performed three times every day.

Our results clearly showed a high incidence of neural and psychological disorders (slight ataxia, cephalea, irritability, mental weakness, loss of short-term memory, and hallucinations in some severe cases) and also a greater extent of AMS in the control group.

In conclusion these findings indicate the convenience of plan the expeditions with balanced gender composition. In addition, several measures in order to facilitate a higher degree of intimacy between the expedition members are also strongly recommended. We will follow this interesting research field, since wider and deeper studies are needed. Applications to participate as control subjects will be welcome.
